White Water Rafting
WHITE WATER RAFTING
With a spectacular scenery, forest covered hills, deep gorges plunging down to the Kelaniya River, Kithulagala is ‘The Place’ for white water rafting fans. Depicting the many faces of nature, the Kithulgala jungle provides the capability of camping to bear witness to its beauty and attraction. Nevertheless, rafting is not the only activity that should be experienced during a weekend stay at Kithulgala since bird watching, visiting the pre historic caves, mountain biking and bathing in natural ponds and waterfalls are also some of the attractions that cannot be missed out for the world. With a guaranteed amount of fun and leisure, white water rafting in Kithulagala is bound to be a paradise for nature lovers and an ocean of opportunities for photographers.
WHALE WATCHING
The Dondra point, down south is the famous spot among both locals and foreigners simply because of its feature of whale and dolphin watching. With the peak months been from December to April, the area is flooded with ferries from the Naval force and private operators who carry tourists to bear witness to this amazing scenery. The chances of perceiving sperm whales during this time period backed by the dolphins, would be a definite 95 percent since their migration path is just off this ‘Dondra point’. However, this is not the only place in the island to be a part of this experience as areas such as Kalpitiya, Galle and Mirissa simultaneously have the equal capability of providing a fully-fledged bundle of fun and guaranteed breath taking sites. If the timings seem off or months not accommodating, don’t beat yourself up because whale watching is also possible during June to September off the Eastern shores in areas such as Trincomalee.

HIKING
For the keen hiker, Sri Lanka’s mist covered mountains offer fabulous opportunities. The mysterious Hortain Plains National Park offers excellent hikes in an unusual environment characterised by forest patches, grasslands and vegetation. When climbing the picturesque Adams Peak, the hike is usually scheduled to begin at night to arrive at the top just in time for the breath taking sun rise at its peak.  Further, a walk down Ella will show you attractions such as Little Adam’s Peak and the Namunukula mountain range; ideal for trekking and hiking. Not stopping from there, the list goes on and on to the vicinity of Kandy where Knuckles Mountain Range awaits exploring along a 155 square km stretch with five major forest formations and scenery like no other.  Hikers are usually amazed at how much beauty such a tiny island has to offer and never does this tropical island falls short of impressing.
SURFING
Listed as one of the top ten beaches for surfing or surfer point as it’s informally known, Arugam Bay on the south-east coast is where surfers come in search of the exciting and thrilling experience and has been that way since the 1970’s. With the season running from July to August, surfers dare to miss out the opportunity and a result keep coming back year after year for more. The addicting passion of surfers driven by the secluded beaches and thrilling waves, makes it inviting even to the less passionate. Apart from ‘Arugam Bay’, the Southwest Coast such as Hikkaduwa and South Coast starting from Galle and going right up to Tangalle are a few of the other destinations that are ideal for surfing. This viral sport doesn’t follow an expert only policy and as a result provides an opportunity for the inquisitive and daring to test their skills with surfing schools located around the sandy beaches.
